What’s It Like Being Under Dental Sedation?

Woman benefiting from nitrous oxide dental sedationWhether you suffer from anxiety or need dental work, sedation dentistry can help you sit back and relax while in the dentist’s chair. However, it’s normal to have concerns about what you can expect while you’re sedated. The effects differ depending on the medication used. Here’s what you can expect it to be like while being under certain dental sedation.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a medication taken before your appointment. As it takes effect, you will feel very relaxed and may even be a bit sleepy. It’s not unusual for patients to doze off during their appointment, but you won’t be rendered unconscious. You can still be awakened to respond to your dental team’s instructions. It can take a few hours for the effects to wear off, so you’ll need someone to drive you home from your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is more commonly called “laughing gas.” It is delivered through a mask placed over your nose. It promotes relaxation, and your extremities may feel heavy or tingly. It’s a great option for patients with mild-to-moderate anxiety. It’s safe for most patients, including children. After your procedure, your dentist will remove the mask and within a few minutes, you’ll feel completely normal. You can even drive yourself home from your appointment.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is recommended for patients needing lengthy or complex procedures. A sedative is delivered intravenously, giving your dentist greater control over the amount administered. It’s normal to sleep through your appointment and have little memory of the procedure. Although you may not be aware of it, you can still respond to your dentist’s instructions. It can take several hours for the effects to wear off, so it’s best to take it easy for the rest of the day.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is reserved for patients needing extensive treatments, like dental implants or bone grafting. You will be rendered unconscious and will sleep through the appointment, so you don’t have to worry about any pain or anxiety. You’ll be monitored for a short time after your procedure before you go home. It’s best to have somebody stay with you for 24 hours until you’re feeling completely normal.

If you have any questions about what you can expect, don’t hesitate to discuss them with your dentist. They’ll give you the information you need to calm your nerves so you can look forward to your upcoming appointment.
