Why are Temporary Veneers Necessary?
May 11, 2023
Smile-enhancing veneers can be placed in as few as two appointments. However, many patients don’t realize that in the weeks between said appointments, they will need to wear temporary veneers. This may seem odd on the surface, but it’s actually an important step. Here’s the full story on the role of temporary veneers as well as what you can expect while wearing them.
Why Do Temporary Veneers Need to Be Placed?
Temporary veneers are meant to help protect your teeth while you’re waiting for the permanent versions. Such protection is necessary because a small amount of enamel needs to be removed from each tooth receiving a veneer to ensure a proper fit. Less enamel means increased vulnerability to cavities and other issues; as such, the prepared teeth need to be covered to keep them safe.
In addition to offering vital protection, temporary veneers also give you a preview of the end result of your cosmetic treatment. Not only will you get to see what your new smile will look like, but you’ll also get an idea of how your teeth will feel and how your bite will line up when veneers are in place. If there’s anything you’re not happy with, you can let your dentist know so that they can adjust the final veneers accordingly.
What Is It Like to Have Temporary Veneers?
You’ll wear temporary veneers until the permanent ones are ready, which will usually take a couple of weeks or so. Here is what you can expect in the meantime:
- If temporary veneers are placed on consecutive teeth, there may not be gaps between them, meaning you won’t be able to floss in those areas. You’ll therefore likely need to make a few changes to your oral hygiene routine.
- You might find it more difficult to chew your food due to the thickness of your temporary veneers. It might be a good idea to switch to a diet of soft foods for the time being. Don’t worry; you likely won’t have this problem with the permanent veneers since they’ll be thinner.
- Do not eat anything that might dislodge your temporary veneers. This includes a variety of hard or sticky foods.
- Be wary of hot or cold foods and beverages. Removing enamel tends to make your teeth more sensitive to temperature.
As long as you’re mindful about taking care of your temporary veneers, you’ll be more likely to avoid having issues with them. You’ll therefore be able to simply look forward to having your dazzling permanent veneers placed so that you can achieve the smile that you have always pictured for yourself.
